It used to be a hobby for the privileged, for those courageous few who were willing to take a risk. People with abilities that seemingly went beyond human standards, people who absolutely refused to leave the present behind, having surrendered to the beauty of a secret world, the world of fish and sponges, shipwrecks and eternal silence.
The legends of lost treasures hidden away in the depth of the oceans, the incredible stories the sponge-divers used to tell about the legendary waters of Barbaria, Spielberg’s three movies about the jaws of those “beastly blood-thirsty monsters” and the countless documentaries of Jacques Cousteau, are all responsible for shaping the post-war image of scuba divers, also known as “frogmen”. It’s no wonder that the mere mention of the word makes one think of something extraordinary and “out of this world” and, most of all, incredibly dangerous.
This belief is not entirely in the wrong, but it definitely is very old-fashioned. It belongs to a different era, a time of rusty diving suits and fearless sponge-divers, a time when people were not yet aware of the natural and medical conditions of diving and only had basic equipment to work with. But these days are long gone and they’re never coming back.
If you too share these dated beliefs, then it’s high time you changed your mind and this summer is definitely the time to do it. A century ago, when Jules Verne wrote his amazing novel entitled “20.000 Leagues Under the Sea”, all of his contemporaries, critics, editors and fellow writers, considered the idea of any human activity below the sea utopian. Today, more than a hundred years later, diving technology has reached its fourth generation and scuba diving has become one of the most popular water sports in the world. As a matter of fact nowadays it’s safer to dive than drive down a highway, and that’s according to official statistics.
This summer it’s your chance to challenge the myth of diving! Training for the first diving license doesn’t take more than five to eight days and the costs range between 200 and 300 Euros. Young readers should note that they need to be 16 before they are allowed to start training, but other than that the only pre-requisite is willingness to learn.
There are many well-organized diving centers in popular holiday destinations that accommodate tens of thousands of tourists every summer, offering high standard services. It’s worth mentioning that a very high percentage of foreigners first came in contact with this sport while in Greece! Beginners can attend special training courses, while more experienced crowds can take part in organized diving expeditions with specially equipped boats. Greek divers also generate a lot of business for diving centres because of the growing holiday trend of combining vacation time with diving. It’s worth mentioning that there is a substantial amount of local divers who do not hesitate to travel thousands of miles every year in order to explore the waters in different parts of the world, while thousands of divers seem to choose their holiday destinations with diving in mind.
