| Wind Surfing |
|
|
The term wind surfing seems to have been invented in order to describe that feeling you get when you’re riding the waves, that 6th sense you’ve been longing for all these years: One man trying to master the sea, tracing new saltwater paths through the wind and the waves. All the powerful magic of wind surfing is in the freedom of body and soul. Beginner’s tips: The first thing you have to do before you buy any equipment is take windsurfing lessons in order to learn all the basic skills involved with this sport. For those of you who have only just started, the most suitable beaches are the ones with shallow waters, where inexperienced surfers will be able to keep their balance even with a moderate wind and a few waves. If you chose to learn by experience, then there are some things you need to know: The basic equipment for every beginner is a surfboard, a sail, a mast, and most importantly, a good wet suit. The sail needs to be quite light and small so that you can pull it out of the water with minimum effort. The surfboard needs to be about 3 - 3.20 meters long so that it won’t sink even if you’re overweight, and you’ll be able to stay on it even when the wind is down.
If you want to enjoy surfing the most important thing is to choose the right beach.
Best Places to Surf: If you’re a beginner the best beaches in Attica are the following: Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Nea Makri, Loutsa, Marathonas, Oropos, Chalkoutsi and Kalamos. In Peloponnesse there’s Drepano, Agios Ilias (Saint Elias), Katakolo, Finikounda and Kalamata. In Chalkidiki you have a choice of three beaches: Nea Roda, Sarti and Gerakini. In Vasiliki (Lefkas) you can surf anywhere you like, the whole gulf is taken over by surfers! Most of these beaches have surfing schools where you can take lessons. In the Cycladic Islands, e.g. Paros, Naxos, Milos, Myconos, Serifos and Kythnos, things can get a bit rough cause there’s bound to be more waves.
About the Wind: The most basic thing beginners should look out for is the wind. It should always be moderate otherwise you won’t be able to keep your balance, and make sure it blows towards the beach so you don’t get stranded too far away. As you get more confident in your surfing skills you’ll want to surf out into the open sea with a good strong wind blowing, which is fine as long as there’s other people surfing nearby or there’s someone watching you from the shore in case of emergency. You should know that during the summer months the wind has very regular fluctuations and it’s always at its strongest at midday.
A Word of Advice · This sport is no different than any other when it comes to drinking, so alcohol is absolutely forbidden before surfing. · Let you friends or family know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. · You should always watch out for swimmers. · Check your equipment and if something’s not looking too good then get it fixed or don’t surf.
