Some of the most ancient finds of human life in the Hellenic area were discovered in Thessaly - dated some hundred thousand years ago. The finds that are related to the Neolithic era are quite significant. Stone and earthen statuettes that are dated from 4.500 B.C. were excavated in many regions of Thessaly: in Pyrassos, in Sesklo, in Dimini and elsewhere. In the coastal regions of the Pagasitic gulf there are finds that testify that the prehistoric inhabitants of Thessaly were in shipping and in fishing. Therefore, Thessaly is considered as the birthplace and the cradle of Greek tribes.
Today Thessaly is administratively divided into four prefectures: Larissa, Magnesia, Karditsa and Trikala. The unique natural beauties and the antiquities lend - even nowadays - glamour to Thessaly, like the one of its brilliant history.
