It’s the biggest island in Greece and the fifth biggest in the whole of the Mediterranean. It consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. Five thousand years of history, brilliant civilizations and innumerous conquerors have left their mark on the island, giving it a unique flavor. Crete owes some of its singularity to the intense contrasts in landscape and geomorphology. The imposing landscapes of the island have been associated with a series of myths, many of which originate in its Minoan past. This is supposed to be the birthplace of Zeus, the father of all Gods, who is often referred to as “Critagenis”, meaning he was born in Crete. A lot of important literary personalities and politicians were born here as well: Vitsentzos Kornaros, Dominikos Theotokopoulos, Eleftherios Venizelos, Nikos Kazantzakis and many others. The unique geological changes, the warm climate, the traditional hospitality of the locals and the endless beaches that surround the island, make it an ideal holiday destination. |
