| The past and the present are intricately entwined in the prefecture of Rethymno. The memories of the Venetians and the Turks are still quite vivid in the narrow streets, still lingering in the Venetian houses and the oriental minarets of the city. On the other side, the century-old tradition is religiously preserved in most mountainous villages. The Moni (Monastery) Arkadiou and the cave of Ideon Adron are very important reference points for the history of the prefecture.
