| Skiathos (capital) |
Skiathos is located on the northeastern side of the island, built on a small hill, right where the ancient city used to be. The town, full of characteristic white-washed houses and cobbled streets, has a very distinct flavor that becomes very cosmopolitan during the summer months, thanks to the hordes of Greek and foreign visitors flooding the island every year. The peninsula separating the main port from the small picturesque harbor mainly used by fishing boats (caique) and sailboats, features a venetian fortress called Bourtzi, also known as the Kastro of Agios Georgios (Saint Georges Castle). It was built by the powerful Gyzis family in 1207. |

| Worth seeing |
•The house where Alexander Papadiamantis used to live, near the port. It now functions as a museum, housing many of the writer’s personal belongings, photographs and biographies. Another house worth visiting is the one that belonged to Alexander Moraitidis, another well-known novelist, also located near the beach. •The venetian fortress of Bourtzi, also known as Kastro of Agios Georgios (Saint Georges Castle), built by the powerful Gyzis family, who practically owned Skiathos in 1207. •The marvelously decorated Monastery of Evagelistria, founded by monks previously residing in Mount Athos. This is the very place where the flag of modern Greece was raised for the first time in 1807. The Monastery of Evagelistria has its own small museum, housing a few church relics. •The former capital of the island, a castle located near Lalaria. •The Monastery of Agios Charalambos surrounded by a very picturesque landscape, where Alexander Moraitidis spent the last years of his life. •The 17th century Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Kounistra, located near Troulos beach. •The Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Kechria, located on the northwestern side of the island, right by the Katabothra bay development. |

| Where to swim |
•Try Koukounaries, the most beautiful natural beach of the Mediterranean, featuring a wonderful parasol-pine forest that goes all the way down to the golden sand. This enchanting landscape is completed by the beaches of Vromolithos, Kanapitsa and Megali Amos. •At Xanemos, a northerly beach with pebbles. The beach of Megalos Gialos and the small port of Nikotsara are located in this part of the island as well. •At Lalaria and Trypia Petra, two of the most beautiful pebbly beaches in the island. Azure Cave is quite near as well, but neither the cave nor the beaches are accessible by land. If you want to get there you’ll have to take a boat out from the main port. •At Aselinos and Kechries, two sandy isolated beaches, one next to the other. •Take a boat out to the tiny rock island of Tsougria (departure point: main port). •At Banana and Troulos, very popular with nudists. |
