Skyros (capital) | Linaria | Magazia - Molos

With 2000 residents, it is located northeast and is the capital of the island.

If you view the town from a distance, you will be reminded of a well-drawn picture, in which you will see the white washed houses with their flat roofs are built very close to each other, from the top of the castle to the bottom of the hill.
The architectural style of the island is so similar to that of the Cyclades that you may wonder if by mistake you are on one of them, however, beyond the town, the verdurous scene of Skyros will convince you that you are visiting the Sporades. The town is situated on a hill, at the top of which is the Byzantine fortress, which is built on top of the ancient citadel of the Homeric king Lycomidis.

Worth seeing
•Worth seeing is the fortress built during the Middle Ages, where you can still find remnants of the ancient fortification as well as a Venetian Tower. The inhabitants built houses within the fortress so that in times of danger they would be protected.
•The citadel of Skyros is found at the monastery of Saint George – established in the tenth century by the Byzantine Emperor Nikiforos Fokas. This monastery belongs to the abbey of ‘Megistis Lavras’ of Mount Athos. The icon of Saint George was brought to the island during the iconoclastic dispute, when icons were banned in the Byzantine Empire from AD 726. Close by, you can view one of the oldest temples of the Aegean, the temple of the Assumption of the Virgin, built in 895AD but was destroyed in an earthquake in 840AD.
•Skyros has many churches (a large number of these belong to local families), around 300, with remarkable frescoes. Those most worthy of a visit are the churches, Arhondopanagias, the Holy Trinity, and the monastery of Saint Dimitrios.
•There is a statue in honour of the English poet, Brooke, and the traditional stone theatre to see at the local square. Brooke’s grave is located at the ‘three boukes’.
•The archaeological museum has a selection of unique findings from the Copper Age up until the Roman Period. You can see such things as ceramic pots, sculptures, and interesting headstones.
•Another place to visit is the Folklore Museum and the ‘House of Skyros’, which is a traditional representation of the characteristic Aegean architecture - it has a large room, which is divided into two with a wooden partition. The domestic utensils, the textiles, and the embroideries not only give the house character, they also decorate their traditional costumes. The woodcarvings lend an especially detailed character to the house.
•The younger members of your group will be especially interested to see the ponies, which are bred on the island and are native to Skyros.
