| Peloponnese |
|
|
It's the southernmost geographic section of mainland Greece. Originally it was an island, but intense geological upheavals in the region united and separated it from the mainland twice. Later, a new retreat by the sea formed the isthmus of Corinth. This land bridge was cut in the late 19th century to make the Corinth canal, making the Peloponnese an island yet again. Peloponnese owes its name to the mythological hero Pelops, a legendary king of the city of Mycenæ, and its medieval naming is Moreas or Morias. Its landscape combines a variety of contrasts: the traveler could see the high woody mountains, the bare tops of mountains and the gorges, the fertile plains and tablelands, the hospitable coasts and the roaring craggy capes… The region of Peloponnese is, inch by inch, dotted with temples, graves and castles, monuments of world value or national weight, narrating a history of about 7000 years. In Peloponnese broke out the Greek Revolution in 1821. Peloponnese is not only a land blessed by the history and the legends but also a land that is always modern, fascinating and hospitable for those who wish to ramble in it. Peloponnese is the geographical department that displays a large number of historical sights, a rich partition of coasts, a hinterland with beautiful nature, villages with a remarkable architecture, developed cities and a high touristic infrastructure. So, Peloponnese has a lot of things to offer, so, enjoy there little by little…. |
