Laconia owes its name to its geographic form. According to the archaic stem "a lac" is a bowl, a valley like the one that lies between the massifs of Taygetus (2407 m. above sea level) and Parnon (1935 m. above sea level). It borders on Arcadia northwards and Messinia westwards, while is washed by the Myrtoon Sea eastwards and the waters of the Laconian and Messinian Bays. The visit in Laconia gives the traveler a chance to get unforgettable impressions: the Byzantine medieval fortresses of Mystras and Monemvassia, the cavern of Diros which is a magnificent monument of nature, the tough and dry landscape of Mani with its tall towers, left in the strong winds of Cape Tainaron; everything is engrafted by the historical memory of the region, under the light of this edge of the mainland of Greece. The traffic - as far as the tourist industry is concerned - in the two capes of the Laconian land is quite heavy. The road network is good and the sightseeing is very promising… |
