| Fourni (capital) |
It has about 1300 residents and it is the capital, as well as the port, of the island. The tiny island complex of Fourni is located between Samos and Ikaria and it consists of three islands with a very distinct flavor, namely Fourni, Thimena and Agios Minas. The island that lent its name to the whole complex is the biggest of the three and, according to tradition, it either owes its name to the shape of its harbor or to the fact that every home used to have its very own stone-built oven (fourni is Greek for ovens). The infertile land, the picturesque little churches, the beautiful courtyards brimming with brilliantly green plants and the dozens of fishing boats mooring off Fourni are the basic characteristics of the island. Once there, you can visit the settlements of Kampi, Ai-Giannis, Keramidi, Kampi Chrisomilias and Kamari. The island of Fourni is well-known for its variety of fresh fish and especially for its delicious lobster. It’s by far the best choice in the East Aegean for those of you who appreciate peace and quiet and like fishing, swimming and boating. Don’t forget to stock up on thyme honey and mizithra (a special kind of cream-cheese) before you go! |
