 Astipalea counts about 800 permanent residents, is the island's capital and lies on its southeast side. It is built on a hillside. Its picturesque houses spread all along the waterfront, with the imposing castle of the Quirini family on the top of the hill. The eight windmills are the town's feature and they complete its beauty. One of the is used by the Municipal Tourist Office. |

• The imposing Venetian castle of Astipalea that is a typical example of a fortifed settlement with the outside walls of the houses of the Quirini family.Inside the castle, one could visit thre beautiful churches of Panagia Kastrou and Agios Georgios. • The Church of Panagia Portaitissa; on the outside, one could admire its dentelated dome, the many decorations which make it the most beautiful church on the island and its imposing stone bell-tower. According to the tradition, it was built by Agios Anthimos (St. Anthimos) in the 18th century. Inside, there is a valuable wood-carved icon screen with sheets of gold where the icon of the Virgin Mary is kept. • The whitewashed chapel of Agios Ioannis (St. John) with the magnificent view and the castle Agios Ioannis (St. John). • The monastery of Panayia Flevariotissa (Virgin Mary Flevariotissa) with the magnificent icon screen. The monastery's feast is on the 2nd of February and it is the winter rendez-vous of Astipalea's friends fromm all over the world. • The Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Library. |
