This tiny island is only visible from the right side of Alonissos and according to ancient sources it used to be named Evonimos. The Byzantines preferred to call it Sarakonisi for obvious reasons, but nowadays the people of Alonissos refer to it as Xiro (Greek for dry) because of how barren it is - except for a few olive groves. The only person who’s been staying in Peristera for the past few years has been a shepherd, who lives up north and breeds free range goats that he later sells to Alonissos. The bay of Vasilikos, where a 5th century shipwreck with thousands of wine amphorae was discovered a few years ago, is located on the western coast of the island. Fishing boats departing from Patitiri take visitors on daily excursions to Peristeri bay, located on the southern side of the island, and Klima on the eastern side, boasting some lovely pebbly beaches. If you decide to rent a boat of your own you can try several other beaches as well, including Vourlias, Ladadiko and Livadakia, wonderfully isolated and sandy. Peristera is one of the best places to fish in the whole of the Sporades Islands. |
