| Stafilos |
It is located on the southern side of the island and it is 4km away from the capital.
Stafilos boasts one of the most cosmopolitan beaches in the Sporades Islands, not to mention a brilliantly green landscape and fertile land, which is the main reason why several families built their farms in this part of the island and managed to live of them for centuries, before deciding to invest in tourism. Viticulture, a two thousand year old tradition, was replaced by almond and plum-tree plantations. Stafilos was named after king Mino’s brother, a legendary hero, who built his kingdom on this very location. The village beach is full of pine-trees flowing all the way down to the sea, like a brilliantly green stream. A small peninsula separates Stafilos from Valiano, another lovely beach mainly attracting nudists. The waters are shallow and calm and it is almost impossible to describe how beautifully the turquoise waters contrast against the green shores. A number of sailboats mooring off the bay complete this charming picture. If there’s good weather you can rent a canoe, row past the cape on your right-hand side, leave the gulf of Stafilos behind and head to Veloni, located on southern side of the island. Make sure you take your mask and flippers with you for the mandatory underwater tour of Poseidon’s gardens! |
