| Amorgos or Hora (capital) |
With approximately 350 residents, it is located southeast on the island and is the capital.
The capital of the island, Hora, is located 5.5 kms from the port of Katapola (in the south), without being visible from the sea. Imposing is the castle and its wall of warriors, clearly of a fortified character, reflecting the precarious period of the Venetian Occupation. In the centre of Hora, you can find the oldest and most distinguished manor, The Tower of Gavra, a building of Venetian architecture, dating from the 16th century. Embedded in its walls are segments of ancient monuments, making the tower the most significant collection of archaeological artifacts on Amorgos. A walk through its back streets will captivate you, and definitely, a worthwhile idea is a stop at, Kira-Leousa. It is the oldest church in town, unique, with a narthex and Paleochristian architectural elements. While those that venture up into the castle must visit, the medieval water tank purveyor found at Kato Pakko. |
