Donousa or Stavros (capital)

The small island community consists of four towns – Donousa (or Stavro), Mesaria (or Haravgi) within the island and Kalotaritissa and Mersini along the coast. Discover the island along one of the trails that begin at the port, or with a small steam boat from the port, or with a car or bike along the road that connects the small towns and the beaches.

Worth seeing
• The remains of the town from 900 BC at Vathi Limenari that has been built upon the site of an older town from the Geometric Period
• The church of the patron Saint of the island, Timiou Stavrou, who according to tradition replaced the church built by the original inhabitants that had arrived from Amorgos. It is said that after a tremendous storm, the icon of the church was washed away and later found on the shores of Amorgos
• Churches of Agia Sofia, Panagia, Agios Yiannis and Agios Yiorgios
• The Tiho cave at Aspro Kavo and the Foskospilia – a sometime seal refuge on the other side of the island. Both caves make an interesting trip during the round of the island by boat (they are inaccessible by land)
• The pioneering energy plant that ensures the energy supply of the town Mersini
• Discover the rocky islets, Makares (Megalo Nisi, Agia Paraskevi, Stroggili as they are otherwise known), Moshonas, Skoulonisi and Melantios, by organizing a mini cruise by yacht or boat.

Where to swim
• The large beach at the port with fine sand
• Kendros beach has its very own shipwreck, not far from the shore: - an English ship from World War II
• At Vathi Limenari, enjoy the lee beach and discover the castle remains
• The wonderful beach at Livadi and Fikio, not far from Mersini
• The remotest beach is at Kalotaritissas (only one hour by foot)
