| Sikino or Hora (Capital) |
With 250 residents, it is located northwest on the island and is the capital.
A welcoming embrace settled on craggy cliff edges. Built on top of two hill, the town looks like its swinging on the edge of the cliff. The view of the neighbouring islands is panoramic. White and graphic with beautiful old mansions, snakelike laneways, white washed churches, and a fresh cobble stoned square that stands out amongst the asbestos terraces. It is for each of these characteristics that Hora is proud – it is one of the most authentic Cycladic towns. |

| Worth seeing |
•The Ionian colonists built the ancient town at Episcope (one hour by foot from Hora), the remains of which can still be seen today. The ancient town came to light, revealing a glorious past, with the discovery of a monument in honour of Apollon Pithio. •See the all white castle at Pandanassa (1787 AD). •The monastery of the Zoodohou Pigis (Spring of Life) sits on the edge of the cliff and reminds one of an impregnable castle. The locals used the monastery as a refuge against the raids of the pirates. Built on the highest point in the area, it provides a panoramic view of the island as well as view of the neighbouring Cyclades. •The Folklore Museum is housed in an old olive press factory in the village. •A must see is the impressive black cave on the north of the island. |

| Where to swim |
•Enjoy your swim at all the beaches on the island. Most of them can be reached by boat from the port of Allopronia. Worthy of a special mention are Santorinaika and Dialiskari. •Swim in the beach at Agios Yiannis with the deep emerald waters, or at Agios Yiorgos, with the palm trees and the tavernas by the sea. •The beach of Malta on the northern side of the island, is surrounded with green cliffs, it is the last lee point before you pass on to the remote rocky west side. •If not sure which direction to head off into, the locals offer a reconnaissance trip on their boats. |
