| Inoussa (capital) |
It has about 700 inhabitants and it is the capital, as well as the port, of the island. The little mermaid statue at one end of the port entrance and the figure of a local mother on the other, heartily welcome visitors. The one and only settlement in the island is built around the port with a beautiful view of Chios. The ship-captains’ manor houses with the high ceilings and the beautiful buildings housing the local administration offices give away the wealth of this island. A walk around the narrow streets of the village is mandatory, just to give visitors a chance to admire the simple, yet graceful, architecture of the place. The town of Inussa has a Naval School and a Merchant Marine Academy and there are almost no cars to be seen around here, in keeping with the wonderful serenity of the island. |
