| Zante or Chora (capital) |
It has 35.000 residents and it is the capital city of the island.
It is built on the southeastern side of Zante and it stretches out along the coastline, boasting the only port in the island. On top of the hill you can still make out the remains of an old fortress, built by the Venetians on the ancient citadel. After the destructive earthquakes in 1953, the town was built from scratch but still managed to preserve its original style and class. Not far from the port, there is a square named after Dionisios Solomos, where you can admire his statue as well as the bust of the poet Hugo Foskolos. |
