The island has a very attractive capital composed of three districts called Agia Marina, Platanos and Pandeli that are located on the eastern part of the island. It's the main centres of the island. The town is situated in a natural amphitheatre on two hills (Merovigli and Apityki) and two bays (of Agia Marina and Pandeli). Platanos Platanos is forming, with Agia Marina and the port of Pandeli, the capital of the island of Leros. It is the oldest capital of the island and is still its historical, cultural administrative and commercial centre with many neoclassical mansions. . From Platanos you can take the steps leading up the Castle of Leros that stands imposing on the top of Apityki hill, climbing 500 steps. The town has grown together with the small fishing village Pandeli on the south side and the harbour town Agia Marina on the north side. Agia Marina Agia Marina forms, with Platanos and Pandeli, the capital of Leros. It is the second harbour of the island as well as its administrative and commercial centre. It has many neoclassical mansions and shops. Agia Marina has recently become the main tourist resort of the island. It is very lively during summer time and has every thing to offer in terms of accommodations and tourist facilities. Pandeli This settlement is built around a fishing port and forms, with Agia Marina and Platanos, the capital of the island of Leros. It is a lovely whitewashed village with a population that is, in its majority, composed of fishermen. It has a few accommodations and some excellent taverns serving fresh fish and seafood. From Pandeli, you can visit the castle and the windmills by car via an asphalted road. |
