| Mandraki (capital) |
Mandraki is the island's capital and harbour. This picturesque settlement of about 700 inhabitants is spread along a hillside and it is situated on the northwest coast of the island. Its traditional houses are brightly painted and have well-kept courtyards. It’s a very pretty little town, with houses packed densely together and tiny alleyways leading here and there. At the centre of the town there is the big Square of the Elderly that is an ideal place for relaxing. Within the town are many tavernas and small bars. Above and overlooking the town is the beautiful monastery of Panagia Spiliani, dating to 1600, set within the Venetian fortress of the Knights of St. John (14th century). As one would certainly imagine, the view is breathtaking. |

| Worth seeing |
• At the top of the hill there is the Castle of the Knights of the Order of St John and the Monastery of "Panagia Spiliani", the island's patron saint. . The view from here is unique. • The Monastery of Panagia Spiliani (The Virgin Mary of the Caves) is the second castle-monastery (previously a cave) in the Dodecanese. The Virgin Mary is also the protector of the island. The monastery is located on the opposite side of the harbour (northwest) and sits on a rock 30m high. It was built around 1600 A.D. It's church is a basilica with a beautiful iconostasis from the 18th century; • The Folklore Museum; • The volcano; Situated just about in the center of the island and accessed by the main road, the volcano is an awesome sight, more moonlike that earthlike. The main crater has a diameter of 260 meters and a depth of 30 meters. Surrounding the crater is the moonlike uneven landscape of yellow sulfur, black rock, and green vegetation that somehow seems to thrive here! If you're wearing good thick-soled shoes, for the floor of the crater is hot, then you can actually descend to the floor of the crater, even though steam and sulfuric dioxide fumes still spew from its vents. The volcano is now dormant, but not completely inactive since but the strong odour of sulphur, as well as strange noises coming from it, make its presence evident. • The tiny islet of Gyali; The tiny islet of Giali is 4 nautical miles northwest of Nissiros and it is serviced by caiques. Its white-washed buildings sparkle under the sun. Here is where the pumice stone is quarried, processed and loaded. There is a small settlement of about 30 inhabitants, mainly workers. |
