Vergina |

|
It is a village, 13 km to the SE of Verria. It is world - famous due to the findings of the excavations directed by professor Manolis Andronicos that took place in 1977-1978. In the east of the modern village there is an ancient town identified with Aegai, the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom. The most significant monuments of Vergina are the royal tombs found in 1977, and 1978. A hill (13 m.h. and a diameter of 110 m ) covered three tombs - two macedonians ( the bigger one belonged to Philip II and the smaller one to a young prince, most likely the son of Alexander the Great who was murdered when he was 13 ) and another tomb, contemporary to Philip's tomb, which belonged to a woman. Next to these tombs, there are the foundations of a memorial used to for the worship of the royal dead. There were also found h Philip's weapons - his shield of gold and ivory - many silver and bronze pots for the symposiums, metal pots for the bath, the royal crown, remnants of a wooden bed decorated with gold, glass and ivory and some other earthenware pots. One of the seven wives of Philip is probably buried in the second tomb. Her bones were in a gold urn, in a marble sharkophagus. The urn also contained a gold crown, which is one of the most beautiful jewels of the ancient world. A brocade decorated with flowers and birds is exhibited in the Museum of Salonica. A gold garland was also found next to the sharkophagus. The tomb also contained another bed decorated with gold and ivory. Against the gate that led to the chambers there were a pair of golden graves, a gold quiver full of arrows and a silver collar - all these must have been spoils. The painting presenting the Rape of Persephone is the only surviving examples of ancient Greek painting. The findings of Verginas royal tombs are among the most significant masterpieces of the ancient Greek art. They testify not only to the wealth and power of Macedonians but also to the artistic quality of their life. Close to Vergina, the visitor could see St John’s the Herald monastery, near Aliakmon 9 km to the west of Vergina. It has got a nice view, picturesque buildings and a small Byzantine church with beautiful murals. |
