| Folegandros or Hora (capital) |
Folegandros/Hora has 250 residents, is located in the centre of the island and is the capital.
You might be won over by the authentic medieval character with the distinguished Cycladic style. All white, graphic homes, narrow cobble stoned laneways, pretty squares – one after the other in succession, bougainvillea, the standard castle (necessary for security in days long gone) and many churches – about 70.But that’s not all. These are the characteristics one finds on the more well to do islands of the Cyclades, however, the atmosphere of the residences, the sense of style, the charm of the surroundings all harmonise to create something charming and special. The spontaneous and warm hospitality of these simple folk adds demonstrably to the charm of the island. The town has two access roads, one via Lontzia and one from Paraporti. |

| Worth seeing |
•Worth a visit is the castle that was built during the Venetian Autocracy (1212 AD) by Markos Sanoudos. Hanging, literally, on the edge of the cliff and looks like a balcony from which you can take in the view of the Aegean. This is no common castle, but one with the security of its people in mind, yet still built according to the Cycladic model. Narrow cobble stoned laneways, houses built very close to each other, creating a secondary type of fortress, and small narrow gardens with fragrant flowers and lush bougainvillea. Beyond the castle and near the top of the cliff you can see the remains of an ancient city, where the Temple of Apollo once stood. This is called Paleocastro meaning old castle. The church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) is built on the wall of the castle; the fighter and protector of the people. As the city kept growing, it became large enough to serve as a second wall around the newer city. •Visit the churches of Eleousas, Pantanassa and Agia Sophia within the castle. •The Metropolis of Agios Nikolaos, Agia Katerina and the Church of the Taxiarhis (Archangel). •The most significant church on the island is that of the Panagia (Virgin Mother) with an impressive marble temple. •Worth seeing is the little studied, Hrysospilia (gold cave) with stalactites and stalagmites. The study of this cave continues under the aegis of the Archaeological Society. |
