| Kimolos or Hora (capital) |
With 700 residents, it is located northeast on the island, 2km from the port and is the capital.
The capital of the island extends around the ruins of the ancient castle that protects the island. The locals refer to the town as the ‘Horio’, it comprises of two townships: Mesa Castro and Exo Castro (the Inner and the Outer Castle. The entire building is yet another example of Aegean fortified architecture. The external walls of the old houses join and form the border, which alters the external windows into loopholes. The Mesa Castro connects with the Exo via four alleyways called, Portares. Within the castle are half ruined ancient mansions with narrow uphill cobble stoned laneways. These houses and their lanes are true examples of Cycladic architecture; you can even imagine them lined prettily with coloured flowers. The new village extends on from the borders of the farms of the old village. |
