With 50 residents, it is located north on the island and 8km out from Hora.
Protected fishing town with a marina docked with sailing boats and small, steamboats (kaekia). The tourist development of the last few years has designated the town a definite stopover for every visitor holidaying in Tzia. Give in to the temptation of ouzo with seafood ‘mezes’ next to the sea, or fresh fish caught around the island by the locals, grilled to perfection and certain to satisfy your taste buds. For those fond of the arts, you will discover, amongst the tavernas, a small gallery with works of art (and originals) by Fasianou, Sperantza and published works relevant to Kea. Worth an inspection is the prehistoric village, from the Copper Age, on the road as you head for Otzia from Vourkari. Close by, you will also see the small church of Agia Eirini (Saint Irene). The houses that have been saved are located higher up and the building slabs made by the locals and used in construction then, are the same materials the locals use today, to pave their gardens’ terraces, ‘pezoules’. |
