| It has about 100 residents and you will find it on the east side of the island, 20 km away from Chora. This is where Elgin’s ship sunk in 1802, while he was transporting the Parthenon. Avlemonas is located 1,5 km away from Palaiopolis and it has beautiful naturally formed harbors and a venetian castle (castleli) situated on the eastern shores of the island. The ancient city of Skandia was built near Kastri in the bay of Agios Nikolaos, but it was destroyed when the volcano of Santorini erupted. There was also a temple dedicated to Aphrodite a little way to the northwest. |
