| Chalkida (capital) |
It has about 52.000 residents and it is located in the heart of Euboea, 82 km away from Athens. It is the capital, as well as the administration center of the island. It is built along the shores of the Euripus Channel that separates the southern from the northern Euboean gulf. Ancient Chalkis was a key location for the trade and distribution of goods. According to Greek mythology, it was built by Kothos and many historians maintain that its name is derived from the phoenician word Kalchi, while others believe that it comes from the greek word Chalkos (copper). It quickly evolved into a significant financial center, founding colonies in the Sporades, Chalkidiki, Italy and lots of other places along the Mediterranean shores and pretty soon it was considered an important cultural and commercial power. The Byzantines, the Franks and the Venetians were careful to maintain and develop the city as best they could. There were a lot of sacred offerings to Artemis, Dionysus, Hera and Apollo discovered around this area. Euboea was also the place where Aristotle found refuge until his death in 322 B.C. This city appears very confusing at first sight, a mixture of old picturesque buildings and cutting edge facilities for both tourism and industry.
