It has about 3500 inhabitants and it is located on the west side of the island, 23 km away from Chalkida.
Eretria has played a very important part in greek history, but it’s not just the ancient ruins that attract so many visitors but also the warmth and the hospitality of the locals. If you go down to the beach you will find a large tourist pavilion with a beautiful view and further to the southwest you will see the brilliantly green island of Pezonisi. The history and the archaeological sights of Eretria prove how important this city used to be in the ancient times.

•The ruins of the temple of Daphnephoros Apollo and the remains of the temple of Isis.
•The theater and the ancient citadel, as well as a series of intricate mosaics dating back to the 4th century B.C., which used to decorate the houses of the wealthier citizens.
•The Archaeological Museum, housing finds from local excavations. The most important exhibits are the Terracotta Centaur from Lefkanti (10th century B.C.), the sculptures from the west pediment of the temple of Apollo, the panathenaic amphorae and the funerary ceramics dating back to the Geometric Age.
•The remains of the baths and the palestra (wrestling arena).
•The house Konstantinos Kanaris lived in, after Psara was destroyed. |
