Aegina (capital)

It has about 7.000 inhabitants and it is located on the west side of the island. It is the capital, as well as the port of the island.

It is very hard to resist such an Aegean touch in the middle of Argosaronikos. The city of Aegina is situated on the west side of the island and it is sure to impress visitors with its neoclassical houses. Walking the narrow streets of Chora and hiring a traditional little horse carriage to drive you along the coast is an opportunity that is not to be missed.

Worth seeing

•The Kivernio (headquarters) of Kapodistrias, the church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicolas) and the Orphanage.
•The ruins of Kriptos Limenas (Secret Harbor), Aegina’s military harbor. Keep going, and you will soon come upon the remains of Apollo’s temple in Kolona.
•The Archaeological Museum, housing finds from the Neolithic Age, the Copper Age and the Roman times. Its most famous exhibits are the marble statue of the sphinx of Aegina, very severely crafted, and the statues taken from the Sanctuary of Aphaia.

Where to swim

•At the beaches of Faros and Marathonas. On the north side of the island you can also try Kolona and Plakakia.
