Piraeus is one of the most important cities in Athens, as well as the biggest port in the country. It is located in the gulf of Saronikos, an extremely opportune position, and it is considered one of the most significant nautical centres in the world. At first, Piraeus was nothing more than a tiny pelasgic settlement on top of Mounichia Hill (Kastela), founded by Munichos and Ietionas, the two local heroes. 450 B.C. saw the construction of the legendary Makra Tixi walls in order to protect the port and shelter the Athenian fleet. Large parts of these walls have managed to survive the test of time and can still be seen in the Freatida area. |
