It has about 4.000 residents and it is located on the southwestern side of the prefecture, 52km away from Heraklion.
It is a very large rural town, named by the Venetians. They were the ones responsible for bringing in refugees from Nafplio and Monemvasia after Peloponnesse was sacked by the Turks, and dividing the valley of Mesaria among them. That same area has now been transformed into a modern city, called Mires. |
