It has about 1000 residents and it is located on the east side of the prefecture, 107 km away from Agios Nikolaos.

It is one of the best and most picturesque villages in Crete. The local port is called Kato Zakros and the place is generally considered friendly and quiet, full of picturesque fish taverns. The area was first inhabited during the Minoan period and at the end of the beach you can visit a Minoan Palace, the most important archaeological site in eastern Crete.
