| Sitia |
It has about 7000 residents and it is located on the northeastern side of the prefecture, 70km away from Agios Nikolaos.
Even though Sitia has progressed a lot on the financial and the tourist front, it has managed to preserve its beautiful landscapes, making it one of the most wonderful places to visit in eastern Crete. According to tradition, the village is built over the ancient Itia, the birthplace of Misonas, one of the seven wise men of ancient Greece. It was first inhabited during the Minoan period, but the modern day Sitia is built amphitheatrically on the side of a hill. The poet Vitsentzos Kornaros was born here as well. |
