It has about 25.000 residents and it is located on the northwestern side of the island, constituting the administrational and financial center of the prefecture. The historical character of Rethymno is quite evident as it’s separated in the old and the new part of town. The old city stretches out at the foot of a very impressive Venetian castle, the Fortetza, ideal for those of you who want to take a stroll down memory lane. The imposing blazons over the intricate wood-carved doors of the Venetian manor houses and the wooden balconies overlooking the cobbled streets will make you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time.
• The fortress of Fortetza, built between 1573 and 1583. The walls of the fortress are protected by four bulwarks and on the inside you can still see some old reservoirs, as well as the administrational headquarters of the Venetians.• The old turkish jailhouse near Fortetza.• The Archaeological Museum, housing findings that cover all the historical and pre-historical periods of the island, along with a small egyptian collection.• The Venetsianiki Lodgia (Venetian Lodge) built in the 17th century. That’s where all of the sovereigns and the aristocrats would socialize and entertain themselves. There was a stock market there too. Nowadays it houses the Public Library. • The Venetian Rimondi fountain, near the Petichaki square. The water gushes out of lion’s mouths set amidst Corinthian columns.• The church of Agios Fragiskos (Saint Frances) in the old part of the city and the church of Kiras ton Aggelon (Our Lady of the Angels)• The minarets of Neradges and Megali Porta, presenting great architectural interest. • The women-only Monastery of Agia Irini (Santa Irene) built in 980. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the island.
• East of the city you will find one of the longest sandy beaches in Crete contrary to the western shores that are very steep and rocky. The beach of Petries is the only exception.
