Moni (Monastery) Arkadi is the most important monument in memory of the Cretan struggles for freedom. It’s a rectangular fortification complex that supposedly owes its name to a local monk. Many of the battles of the 1866 revolution between the Turks and the Greeks took place in Arkadi, due to the significance of its geographical position. The monastery offered shelter to about 1500 people (women and children, fighters, peasants etc) but in spite of their stubborn resistance against the enemy, they didn’t hold up. Father Superior Gabriel, foreseeing the eminent disaster, encouraged the prisoners to blow up the monastery’s power-keg and sacrifice themselves to the cause. Their selfless action has become a symbol of freedom touching the hearts of millions of people worldwide. Northwest of the monastery lies the canyon of Arkadi brimming with luxurious vegetation. The view of the canyon against the blue backdrop of the Cretan Sea, is absolutely magical. |
