Katerini has about 45.000 people; it's in the east part of the Prefecture of Pieria and it is its commercial and administrative centre. Being the capital city of the Prefecture of Pieria, it's a city that has a history of 300 years. It has been founded by refugees from Sinai mountaib in the years of the Turkish domination. The church of Agia Aikaterini (Saint Catherine) was their first shelter. For many years after its liberation from the Turks, in 1912, the town was poor but after the settlement of refugees from Asia Minor, in 1922, the increase of the population made the city a significant commercial, administrative and agricultural center. Today, the city is developped in the field of tourism as well. It is worth seeing/visiting: |
