This visual canvas is filled with white washed, freshly painted houses, the narrow lanes that have all their corners whitewashed, many churches, bell towers and dovecotes. The terraced farms form the outline of the soil – so precious to these farmers. Olive groves, vineyards, and tobacco fields lend their own green hue. The picture is completed with blue and red strokes. Blue for the church domes that marry the sky with the sea, and red like wine, for the colour of the wonderful bougainvilleas that decorate the houses, roads and squares.

Apollonia has been the capital of the island since 1836 AD and was named in honour of the god Apollo of Enagrou. Situated six kilometres from Kamares, the primary port of the island and is built amphitheatrically over three rolling hills.
