The best spot of fishing in the region! Many proclaim that once you have seen this island you will forget the rest. The origin of the name of the island is the cause of some dispute. The word Koufo means, to be deaf, and it is quite interesting that many attribute this quality to the locals and hence the name. However, this is not the case. The name is a derivative of the Greek word Kouf-io which means hollow and is a reference to the huge caves that are visible from a distance out at sea, leading the sailors to believe the island was hollow. The name Kouf-onisi developed from Kouf-io-nisi.
Koufonisia are essentially two islands, Pano (Upper) and Kato (Lower), separated by a narrow canal of 200 metres. Kato Koufonisi is practically barren with few homes and the church of the Panagia built on top of the remains of an ancient site.
