With 50 residents, it is centrally located on the island and only 500 metres from Apollonia.
This village provided refuge from the pirate raids of old. The monks from the monastery Prophitis Elias on the top of the hill would come down for the winter. This monastery is the most important Byzantine monument on the island. It was an inaccessible refuge from the pirates. South of the town is the church of Agios Andreas built 1890 AD on the hill with the same name. Archaeological excavations in the area have shown the region was inhabited from the Prehistoric Age until the Hellenistic Age. |
