With approximately 600 residents, it is located in the centre of the island and is 8km from Fira.

Heading further south the road leads to Pirgos, a traditional medieval town with its own ‘kasteli’ (small castle). From here a small road leads to the highest point on the island (566 metres), where the Monastery of the Prophet Ilias houses a notable collection of ecclesiastical writings and items of folkloric character.
