Olimbos is the northern most village of Karpathos, situated 63 km northwest of Hora. It counts about 300 permanent residents.
The village was established in the 10th century, its construction was finished in the 15th century and it was the safest refuge on the island during pirate raids due to its inaccessible location. The houses with vivid exterior colours and beautifully decorated interiors are built with precision, and every house has a chapel and a mill. Women wear their traditional costumes (fine handmade goatskin boots, intricately embroided jackets, scarves and pinafores, heavy collars of gold coins). They bake bread and Greek style biscuits (koulouria) in outdoor communal ovens from flour ground in the village's medieval windmills. Transport within the village is done by donkeys and even if people are now getting used to visitors, life still goes on, women carrying reluctant goats from the port up the hill, people carrying faggots on their hands. |

| Worth seeing |
• The church of the Virgin Mary (16th century) with the magnificent icon screen and the exquisite frescoes; • The picturesque windmills; almost each family used to have its own windmill; • The houses of Olimbos decorated in the same way; visit the house of the priest of the village as it looks as a folklore museum; • The church of Agios Ioannis; • The ancient town of Vrikou (5th century BC), one of the three towns of Karpathos tha had a significant growth during the Classic times; • North of Karpathos lies the islet of Saria, or the "island of goats", as the only inhabitants are wild goats and sheep. Stravon notes the existance of the town Nissyros in ancient times. You can go there by caïques from Pigadia and Diafani. |
