The town of Larissa, which is the capital of the Prefecture, counts about 112.000 inhabitants and sits in the middle of the plain of Thessaly. It is a major commercial and industrial centre. It is said that the founder of the town was Akrissios, the grand-father of Perseus. The town appears to be the seat of the powerful family of Aleuvades. During the reign of Constantine the great it becomes the seat of a bishop and during the reign of Ioustinianos its walls are built. During the Frankish domination, Larissa was conquered by the Goths, the Bulgarians and the Catalans and, finally, the town was conquered by the Turks. The Turkish domination lasted many years. In 1881 the town was liberated and Greece annexed the town after the Conference of Constantinople. Today, Larissa is the forth biggest town of Greece, it keeps on growing fast, being a major commercial and industrial centre in the region. |
