Ellassona counts about 8.000 people, lies at the north part of the Prefecture, 43 km. far from Larissa. It's the bigger county - one of the five counties of the Prefecture - and it occupies the mountainous areas and Olympus dominates the entire area. Greece annexed Ellassona in 1913, following the Treaty of Bucharest. In this area, there are many monasteries and the most important one is the Monastery of the Holy Mother the Olympiotissa, built during the 14th century. This monastery has unique frescoes and a magnificent woodcut icon screen made following the technique and the style of Metsovo. Ellassona is a town with a significant cultural life. |
