| Cyclades Islands-Syros |
|
|
So much classical elegance could only be found within the Cycladic simplicity of only one island - Syros. An island tied closely to the Frank Autocracy, retaining its most precious elements. Cultural evidence married harmoniously with the Aegean character. At her peak, the capital of Syros, Ermoupolis, was the largest port of Greece and had developed a culture that was especially bright - the memory of which is held clear and undiminished. The history of her grandeur is impressed on the imposing west facing buildings, on the impressive squares, as well as her famous temples. Not far from the romantic atmosphere exuded by Ermoupolis, you will find the seaside towns of Kini, Vari, Pheonix, Galissas, Delagratsia, Megas Gialos, each ready and happy to welcome visitors and offering all the modern comforts.
Ermoupoli With 13.000 residents, it is located east on the island and is the capital, port and Administrative Centre of the Cyclades. Built by the refugees who had fled from Chios, Psara, Kydonia, Kassos and other islands, with the fire of the Revolution still in their hearts. After the Turkish slaughter, the French protection secured those uprooted, with an ideal refuge, where they settled with the only things they could bring: their experience and their pride. Very quickly, during the years of Kapodistrias, the city came into its golden age. It revealed itself as the most significant commercial and nautical centre of the region. It is during this time, that the city develops into the recognizable form we know it as today - the neoclassical buildings that imbue the sense of classical romanticism. Greek, Italian and Bavarian architects, among them was Ernest Ziller who designed the Town Hall, all left their mark on Ermoupolis, a reminder of the style of the European cities of that time. A panoramic view of the island is especially impressive in the evening as the magical lights of the small houses, climbing up the two hills, on the peaks of which stand the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches respectively. The lights become intense descending towards the port and meet the famous Miaouli Square with the statue, palm trees, and the town hall.
Hotels | Studios - Apartments | Camping Worth seeing •The Archaeological Museum, located in a particular wing of the Town Hall houses exhibits from the wider history of the Cyclades. Especially interesting are the exhibits from the prehistoric age (2800 - 2300 BC). •At the archaeological site at Halandrianis, the remains of the fort of the prehistoric acropolis are worth the view. •The ship repair yard at Neoriou is a testament to the wealth and glory of the age when Ermoupolis constituted a significant station in the transit of commerce. •See the statue at the central square Miaouli, and the Town Hall that was designed by Ziller (1876 - 1880 AD). •The Municipal Theatre Apollon situated alongside the central square is a smaller version of Scala of Milan. •The cultural centre next to the Town Hall houses the Public Library. •The exceptional mansions in the neighbourhood, Vaporia. •Wonderful villas nestled in an embrace of trees and flowers at Episkopo. •Do not overlook the church of the Metamorphosis, which is also the Metropolis (cathedral) of Ermoupolis, and the church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother, with the icon of the Virgin Mother, work of the famous Greek artist Dominican Thotokopoulou, otherwise known as El Greco.
Ano Syros With 1000 residents, located east on the island and is 3 km from Ermoupolis. The first Venetian city was built amphitheatrically on the hills of Saint George, close to the natural port of the island. On its peak stands the Catholic Church also named Saint George, highlighting the medieval atmosphere, an age which left its mark characteristically on the town. These elements are the narrow intricate laneways with many stairways, whitewashed houses with the unusual two part doors, the small gardens, wooden balconies, as well as the indigo flowers that blend the white with the blue sky. Ano Syros is a town without noise or pollution from cars. Due to its narrow roads, cars are unable to access most of it. A city with strong musical traditions, especially where the folk and the rebetiko style of song are concerned. This musical town produced the preeminent Marko Vamvakari.
Worth seeing •The archaeological sites at Kastri Hill and at Halandiani with relics from the fort of the prehistoric acropolis and inscriptions from the Roman and Byzantine years. •The museum of the great teacher of rebetiko style music, Marko Vamvakari, in the centre of the city. His bust adorns the central square. •The historical files of the Town Hall and the centre of Historical Studies of the Catholic Bishop of Syros. •The monasteries of the Kaputsinon and the Jesuits. •The medieval catholic church of St George that dominates the hilltop.
