With 600 residents, it is located in the centre of the island and is 12km from Hora.
The roots of this town get lost in the depths of prehistoric time. The residents pride themselves on the fact that their ancestors are the Dryopes, the first inhabitants of the island. The village is also known as Syllakas. It has a scattered beauty, which is both peculiar and distinct. Most of the homes are two storied with ceramic rooftops – this is due to the development of ceramics on the island. The village is famous for is festivals and party spirit.
Worthy of a visit are the group of caves ‘Katafiki’ at Fires, known as one of the largest in Greece. It certainly is full of surprising stalactite and stalagmite monuments, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. It is one of the reasons the caves are used during the Easter Sermons. Unfortunately, it has not been developed enough to be admired in all its grandeur. The folklore museum has enough interesting items to keep you captivated. The churches of Agio Mina, Agio Nektario, Agia Anna, Agion Apostolon, all exist as the Patron Saints of the village. |
