With 150 residents, it is located northeast on the island and is 5km from Hora.
Loutra is the Greek word for baths and though well known to the Ancient Greeks, many visitors are unaware of their existence at Loutra. They are however remarkable not just for their therapeutic qualities but for the natural beauty they lend to the village, detracting from the many modern homes the village now has. The port of the village Loutra, had known a glorious past in days of old, the old bridge that was used in the transport of the metals mined in the region of Kakovoulou, still exists and is a tribute to those times. The Castle of Orgias (Katakefalou) is the location of the medieval capital of the island. Still standing are some of the walls and houses, as well as two churches out of the numerous ones that are thought to have existed here. The distance between Loutra and the Castle is less than an hour’s leisurely walk. The small township of Agia Irene with its ‘Kithnaikon’ monument also has a lovely beach. At Loutra you can enjoy a swim in the beach in town. You can also enjoy a swim at Shinari, Maroula, Kavouroheri, Potamia, Sarantou, Agios Sostis, and Mamakou. If you enjoy getting around by boat, then you can quite easily access the following beaches – Avlaki, Sklavou, Selino, Mersinia, and Sarakiniko. |
