It has about 4000 residents and it is located on the northwestern side of the island, 117 km away from Chalkida if you take the short-cut through Limni.
The beauty of the landscape, the sea breeze and the well-preserved neoclassical manor houses of Edipsos and Limni give the north of Euboea its own distinct flavor. This city has been mentioned by Aristotle, Plutarch and many other ancient writers. Emperors, as well as Roman and Byzantine generals have all stayed here for health reasons or recreational purposes, building theaters and guest houses in an effort to make their stay as pleasant as possible. The contemporary part of the city is built as a continuation to the ancient one, with a well-organized infrastructure.

•The hot springs, which happen to be the warmest in Europe. There are four main springs north of the city, utilized by both public and private spas. •Sulla’s cave, named after the Roman general who resorted to the local hot springs in 83 B.C., trying to cure his arthritis. •The remains of the ancient city on top of the hill, as well as the ruins of the roman baths (Sulla’s included). •The local archaeological finds near the most recently built spa. •The byzantine Monastery of Agios Georgios (Saint George), near the village Ilia. It has some very beautiful wall-paintings and it’s built over a sanctuary that used to be dedicated to Apollo Helios. •The «Therme Sila» spa and its adjoining hotel, stretching along the coastal road of the city. It’s an impressive complex, consisting of renovated neoclassical buildings. |
