| Istiea |
It has about 5000 residents and it is located on the north side of the island, 140 km away from Chalkida (if you take the short-cut through Limni it’s 137 km).
It is named after the homonymous ancient city, famous for its tasty grapes and quality wine since the days of Homer. It actually used to be a battle ground in the ancient times because it has an endless valley.

| Worth seeing |
•The byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi in the town square. •The Natural History Museum, right outside Istiea, at the bridge of Xiria. All the exhibits are courtesy of the hunter’s association. •The church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Diniou, 5 km towards the direction of Istiea. The scenery is absolutely amazing with lots of plane-trees and running waters. Diniou is Turkish for ‘comeback’. According to tradition, a Turkish soldier once took a shot at the icon of the Virgin Mary but the bullet came right back at him and shot him dead. The church holds a big festival every year, attracting both local and foreign visitors on the 23rd of August. •The bay near Kanatadika, an important natural preserve for migratory and endemic birds. •The amazingly beautiful forest of mount Telethrio, full of beeches and chestnut trees. You can get there by way of Galtsades. The dirt road is quite passable: It goes right through the forest and stops near the village of Voutas. |

| Where to swim |
| •At Kanatadika and a little further down at the beach of Orei and Neos Pirgos. |
