Monemvassia, the Byzantine and Venetian jewel of the eastern coast of the Peloponnese, is 26 klm. far from Molaï. The fortress-state of Monemvassia, with the forty churches, with the arches under which the cobbled streets intersect, throbs with life. Monemvasia occupies a steep, rocky islet connected to the Laconian coast only by a narrow causeway. From the mainland the rock appears uninhabited. Behind the heavy door of the entrance and the walls of the fortress, the visitor will find a town that is full of life, with coffee-houses, bars, restaurants and boarding-houses, a town which will give him the chance to see its medieval daily routine through today.
The new village of Nea Monemvassia lies just a thousand metres from the causeway on the mainland. It is a modern tourist resort with fine beaches that can cope with the great tourist demand.
