Pirgos Dirou has about 250 permanent residents and lies 82 klm. from Sparta, to the south-west of Laconia.

Driving south from Areopoli, there is a typical maniot village that has the privilege to hide in the bowels of its very dry soil the underground river with the most remarquable cave on earth with stalactites and stalagmites, the  Glifada Caves that draw the attention of thousand tourists.
