Volos has 105.000 permanent inhabitants and it is the capital and economic centre of the perfecture of Magnesia. Volos is the "land of the argonauts". In Ancient Greece, Volos, then named "Iolkos", was an important part of historical events of the time and this is the place that Jason (Iason) initiated the "Argonautic Expedition". Volos is the main export and industrial centre of Thessaly and its harbour is the scene of much commercial and passenger traffic bound for the Sporades, the great ports of Mediterranean, Syria and other Middle Eastern cities. A remarkable industrial growth can be mentioned, mainly in the sectors of textile industry, cement industry, the process of tobacco and iron as well as in the field of flour industry. Thus, Volos is experiencing today an intense economic and cultural development. In 1955 strong earthquakes demolished the city to a large extent, but Volos was quickly rebuilt and today is one of the most beautiful Greek cities, keeping its glamour and beauty. |
